26 GASTROENTEROLOGY Top 10 gastroenterology hospitals, ASCs in the U.S. By Riz Hatton H ere are 2022's top 10 gastroenterology hospitals and ASCs in the U.S. according to U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek. U.S. News & World Report analyzed 1,586 hospitals and ranked the top 50 for gastroenterology and GI surgery. Newsweek ranked the top 510 ASCs nationwide. e rankings, compiled in collaboration with market research firm Statista, are based on a survey of more than 4,000 medical professionals from August to September, along with analysis of performance data from more than 5,000 ASCs. Here are the top 10 hospitals for gastroenterology and GI surgery, according to U.S. News & World Report: 1. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.) 2. Cedar-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles) 3. UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles) 4. Cleveland Clinic 5. NYU Langone Hospitals (New York City) 6. Keck Medical Center of USC (Los Angeles) 7. Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago) 8. Houston Methodist Hospital 9. Mayo Clinic (Phoenix) 10. Ten key GI compensation statistics in 2022: 1. Self-employed, mid-career gastroenterologists earn $504,580 a year on average. 2. Gastroenterologist pay jumped 12 percent in 2022 from 2021. 3. The average gastroenterologist incentive bonus last year was $74,000. 4. Average gastroenterologist pay hit $453,000 in 2022. 5. The median net patient revenue per gastroenterologist hit $837,910 in March. 6. Gastroenterology was the sixth highest paying specialty last year. 7. Twenty-two percent of gastroenterologists reported a net worth of over $5 million. 8. Chicago is the highest paying city for mid-career gastroenterologists, at $477,873. 9. New York City has the highest pay gap between employed and self-employed gastroenterologists, at $395,406 and $521,759 respectively. 10. Atlanta is the highest paying city for late-career gastroenterologists, at $538,499. n CMS expands colorectal cancer screening coverage: 2 things to know By Riz Hatton C MS has expanded colorectal cancer screening coverage as part of its finalized 2023 Physician Fee Schedule released Nov. 1. Two things to know about CMS' final ruling on colorectal cancer screenings: 1. CMS is expanding Medicare coverage for certain colorectal cancer screening tests by reducing the minimum age payment and coverage limitation from age 50 to 45. 2. CMS is expanding the regulatory definition of colorectal cancer screening tests to include a complete colorectal cancer screening, where a follow-up colonoscopy screening after a Medicare covered noninvasive stool-based colorectal cancer screening test comes back positive. For most beneficiaries, cost sharing will not apply for either the initial stool-based test or the follow-on colonoscopy. n
