34 CIO / HEALTH IT Daniel Barchi named CIO of CommonSpirit Health By Giles Bruce D aniel Barchi has been named senior executive vice president and CIO of Chicago-based CommonSpirit Health. He had been CIO of New York City-based NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital since 2015. He starts at the $34 billion, 140-plus-hospital system Nov. 7 following a nationwide search. He will report to CEO Wright Lassiter III. "The CIO role is integral to our ministry, and the addition of Daniel to our team will help us further advance our mission in the communities we serve," Mr. Lassiter said in a Nov. 2 health system news release. "I have no doubt that his expertise and leadership will help CommonSpirit deliver a more integrated digital experience for our patients, providers and employees." Prior to NewYork-Presbyterian, Mr. Barchi served as CIO of Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health, Yale School of Medicine and Roanoke, Va.-based Carilion Clinic. "It's a privilege to join a mission-oriented organization focused on improving the health of so many people," Mr. Barchi stated. "I'm excited about the many opportunities to leverage technology that can increase access to health care and support those who are delivering that care each day." Suja Chandrasekaran, the former senior vice president and chief digital and information officer of CommonSpirit Health, left the organization in June. n Providence data analytics spinoff lays off 32 employees By Naomi Diaz A dvata, the data analytics spinoff from Renton, Wash.- based Providence, laid off 32 workers, GeekWire reported Oct. 28. "We are sincerely grateful for everyone's contributions and extremely sad to see any of our team members depart from the company," wrote Julie Rezek, CEO of Advata, in an email to employees. The company, which focuses on selling insights-focused data software products to payers and providers, employed about 150 people when it launched in June. Advata's customers include Providence and other healthcare providers, as well as insurance and medical device companies. n Cleveland Clinic to bill up to $50 for MyChart messages By Laura Dyrda C leveland Clinic will begin to bill for Epic MyChart messages requiring a provider's clinical time and expertise beginning Nov. 17. Patients have been able to send MyChart messages for free, and providers typically respond within three business days. But now the health system plans to bill for messages about medication changes, new symptoms, changes to long-term medical conditions, checkups on long-term conditions and requests to complete medical forms sent through MyChart, according to a news release from Cleveland Clinic. Messages to schedule an appointment, get prescription refills and ask questions that could lead to an appointment will remain free. Patients can also give providers health updates without any extra charges. Cleveland Clinic plans to bill for any interactions taking five or more minutes for providers to respond and will bill insurance companies. Medicare patients with secondary insurance will not have co-pays, but some Medicare beneficiaries may see a $3 to $8 fee. Many privately insured patients will not have a copay, but if they have a deductible or their plan does not cover MyChart messaging, patients could be billed $33 to $50 per message. n Geisinger CIO leaves for software company By Giles Bruce J ohn Kravitz, the former CIO of Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger, has left the health system for software company Workday, according to a HealthTech Magazine story. Mr. Kravitz was CIO of Geisinger since 2009 and previously worked in that role for Allentown, Pa.-based Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network and Clarks Summit, Pa.-based Allied Services, per his LinkedIn profile. He had most recently helped steer Geisinger's cloud migration to Amazon Web Services. Mike Angelakos, DrPh, is the interim CIO of Geisinger, a health system spokesperson confirmed to Becker's. He had been the associate CIO and chief technology officer since July 2021, and previously worked in IT leadership roles for Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health for more than 17 years, according to his LinkedIn page. n
