37 NURSING SPOTLIGHT Nurse practitioner will be fastest-growing job over next decade By Kelly Gooch T he occupation with the highest projected percent change of employment in the U.S. between 2021 and 2031 is nurse practitioner, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. e bureau estimates that employment of nurse practitioners will grow by 46 percent during that period, from 246,700 to 359,400. Other healthcare occupations among the 20 with the highest projected percent change of employment in the U.S. between 2021 and 2031 are: • Medical and health services managers (28 percent) • Physician assistants (28 percent) • Physical therapist assistants (26 percent) Overall, the bureau estimates that employment in healthcare occupations will grow 13 percent from 2021 to 2031, resulting in about 2 million new jobs over the decade. "In addition to new jobs from growth, opportunities arise from the need to replace workers who leave their occupations permanently. About 1.9 million openings each year, on average, are projected to come from growth and replacement needs," the bureau said. n American Academy of Nursing honors Cedars-Sinai CNO with lifetime legacy award By Nika Schoonover L inda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN, FAAN, Los Angeles- based Cedars-Sinai chief nursing officer emeritus was selected to receive the 2022 Lifetime Legacy Award from the American Academy of Nursing. Ms. Burnes Bolton is being recognized for her leadership throughout her 50-year career to improve patient care, advance health equity and promote the nursing profession, according to an Oct 24. news release shared with Becker's. She joined Cedars-Sinai in 1971 and had numerous leadership positions including senior vice president and chief health equity officer before retiring in 2022. She also served as president of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership, the National Black Nurses Association and the American Academy of Nursing. She was a member of the board of trustees of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, chair of the RWJF National Advisory Committee for Transforming Care at the Bedside and Veterans Affairs Commission on Nursing and vice- chair of the RWJF Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine. n Image Credit: Adobe Stock
