9 BECKER'S DENTAL + DSO REVIEW // VOL. 2022 NO. 3 DENTAL PROFESSIONALS 6 operating costs increasing at dental practices By Ariana Portalatin S upplies, staff wages and rent are a few expenses with a higher price tag this year for dental practices, according to an August poll by the American Dental Association's Health Policy Institute. The poll was taken as part of the ADA's monthly "Economic Outlook and Emerging Issues in Dentistry" report. The HPI surveyed about 1,200 dentists on their operating expenses, according to a Sept. 8 news release. Here is the percentage of dentists who experienced increasing costs at their dental practices: Supplies and materials • Increased more than 20 percent: 26 percent • Increased 11-20 percent: 42 percent • Increased 1-10 percent: 27 percent Staff wages • Increased more than 20 percent: 16 percent • Increased 11-20 percent: 31 percent • Increased 1-10 percent: 44 percent Lab fees • Increased more than 20 percent: 8 percent • Increased 11-20 percent: 27 percent • Increased 1-10 percent: 47 percent PPE • Increased more than 20 percent: 31 percent • Increased 11-20 percent: 27 percent • Increased 1-10 percent: 22 percent Equipment • Increased more than 20 percent: 13 percent • Increased 11-20 percent: 30 percent • Increased 1-10 percent: 34 percent Rent/mortgage • Increased more than 20 percent: 4 percent • Increased 11-20 percent: 8 percent • Increased 1-10 percent: 27 percent n Oral surgeon pay has declined in the last five years, data shows Here is the annual oral surgeon salary from 2016-20, the most recent year data was available: 2020: $234,990 2019: $237,570 2018: $242,370 2017: $242,740 2016: $232,870 How dental hygienist pay has changed in the last five years Here is annual dentist hygienist salary from 2016-20, the most recent year data was available: 2020: $78,050 2019: $77,230 2018: $75,500 2017: $74,680 2016: $73,440 How dental assistant pay has changed in the last five years Here is the annual dentist salary from 2016-20, the most recent year data was available: 2020: $42,310 2019: $41,170 2018: $39,770 2017: $38,690 2016: $37,890 How dental pay has changed in the last five years Here is the annual dentist salary from 2016-20, the most recent year data was available: 2020: $180,830 2019: $178,260 2018: $175,840 2017: $174,110 2016: $173,860 Four dental jobs make US News' best-paying list for 2022 Here are the dental jobs, along with their median salaries, that made U.S. News and World Report's best-paying list for 2022: Orthodontist — $208,000 Oral and maxillofacial surgeon — $208,000 Prosthodontist — $208,000 Dentist — $158,940 Dentist salary in 2020 vs. 2021, by state 1. The highest paying state for general dentists shifted from Rhode Island in 2020 to Delaware in 2021. 2. Salaries had the largest decrease in Idaho, dropping more than $80,000 from 2020 to 2021. The average pay was $206,360 in 2020 and $124,750 in 2021. 3. New Mexico had the highest salary increase, moving up from $166,910 in 2020 to $189,430 in 2021 for an increase of $22,520. 4. In 2020, there were 15 states with average salaries of more than $200,000. In 2021, there were just four states with average salaries of more than $200,000. 5. In total, 16 states saw salaries increase from 2020-21, while 32 states had a downturn. n
