46 TRANSACTIONS UnitedHealth's year of acquisitions: 5 major deals to know By Patsy Newitt UnitedHealth, parent company of Optum and ASC chain SCA Health, is having a huge year for acquisitions. Five deals in 2022 to know: 1. UnitedHealth Group, the nation's largest operator of Medicare Advantage plans, acquired Texas Medicare insurer KS Plan Administrators. e insurer is affiliated with the Houston-based Kelsey-Seybold medical group. 2. In early April, Optum finalized a deal to acquire Houston- based Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. Kelsey-Seybold is a group practice offering treatment in 55 medical specialties at 24 locations in the Houston area and employs more than 500 physicians and allied health professionals. 3. LHC Group shareholders gave their approval for the Lafayette, La.-based home health firm to be purchased by Optum June 21. UnitedHealth Group and LHC first announced the $5.4 billion deal March 29. UnitedHealth Group said at the time the acquisition was expected to close in the second half of 2022. 4. Optum received clearance to buy the 30-location independent physician organization Atrius Health. With the approval of the Massachusetts attorney general's office, Optum plans to pay $236 million for the Auburndale, Mass.-based health system, which includes 645 physicians and primary care providers. 5. Optum reportedly purchased Jacksonville Beach, Fla.-based Refresh Mental Health from private equity firm Kelso & Co. Refresh Mental Health has a network of more than 300 outpatient sites in 37 states with more than 1,500 employees. While financial terms have not been disclosed, Kelso & Co. bought Refresh Mental Health in December 2020 for about $700 million. n HCA acquires Performance Health Surgery Center with 5 physician partners By Claire Wallace H CA Healthcare has expanded its network of 153 ASCs by acquiring interest in Performance Health Surgery Center in Fort Myers (Fla.) along with five physician partners. Performance Health Surgery Center is 14,910-square- feet, with four operating rooms and state-of-the-art equipment for minimally invasive outpatient procedures, according to an Aug. 18 press release sent to Becker's. HCA Healthcare completed the acquisition July 1. "Our team at Performance Health Surgery Center is pleased to partner with HCA Healthcare to continue providing convenient, efficient and safe outpatient care to patients in Southwest Florida," David Eichten, DO, orthopedic surgeon at Performance Health Surgery Center said in the release. "Our highly-specialized surgeons perform complex outpatient orthopedic and spine procedures, including robotic total knee replacements, by using minimally invasive techniques that result in faster recoveries and excellent patient outcomes." n USPI, United Urology Group ink 22-ASC joint venture deal By Paige Haeffele U nited Surgical Partners International and United Urology Group signed an official agreement to form a joint venture partnership in 22 ASCs on June 21. Dallas-based USPI will acquire a portion of Owings Mills, Md.-based United Urology Group's ownership interests in its established and new ASCs in Maryland, Colorado and Arizona, adding more than 140 urologists to USPI's urology service network, according to a June 21 news release. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter. Once completed, USPI will manage and jointly own the centers with United Urology Group and its affiliated practices. "The partnership will add high-quality urology centers within our existing markets. We are honored to serve additional patients and support the growth of these ASCs," said Brett Brodnax, president and CEO of USPI, a subsidiary of Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare, said in the release. The centers will be included in Tenet Healthcare's financial statements. n Property management company buys Tennessee ASC By Carly Behm M ontecito Medical purchased a building housing Hendersonville, Tenn.-based Indian Lake Surgery Center, RE Journals reported Aug. 31. The ASC leases 100 percent of the space and focuses on orthopedic and neurological procedures. The building is 7,300 square feet and has three operating rooms. Indian Lake Surgery Center is near TriStar Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tenn. n
