Chief Nursing Executive at UCLA Health: e best advice I received came from my dad when I was in my teens. He always reminded me that it never hurts to ask; the worst thing that anyone will ever tell you is no, and you don't have to take no for an answer. Kristin Ramsey, RN. Always be open to new ideas, new thoughts and new opportunities for yourself as a leader. Most of those opportunities will come from others around you who can see what you offer and where you need to grow. Use that experience to offer the same support and growth opportunities to young, developing leaders, as they are our future. Ryannon Frederick, RN. Chief Nursing Officer at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.): As a new chief nursing officer, I had a colleague that I respected and trusted who provided advice that I carry with me to this day. During challenging times, relationships are more important than ever. As nurses, we spend an incredible amount of time with the people we work with, and investing time in those relationships is one of the most important aspects of my role. With the dynamics that are challenging nursing and health care, this has become more and more challenging, but also more and more important. Caring is the foundation of nursing practice. Comforting people and families that are suffering, grieving, fighting for hope and healing is mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting. But the rewards received in return outweigh all the challenges. Nothing is better than seeing how patients and people are better because of your interventions, touch, compassion and vision. Each day, I look for opportunities to strengthen relationships through open communication and modeling authentic and transparent behaviors. I remain true to myself in my actions and words. An example of this is that I try to develop trust by following through on commitments and seeking input and perspectives, both positive and negative, prior to making a decision. Just like the staff that I lead, I am driven by the desire to make a difference. We do what we do because we want to make a difference, provide the best care and achieve the best outcomes. is means consistently doing the right thing for our patients, and that means everyone wins. n UnityPoint Health's nurse camps foster interest in nursing among kids By Cailey Gleeson D es Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health has taken a different approach to addressing the national nursing shortage: instilling a passion for the profession at a young age. Fifty-nine middle schoolers from across Iowa gathered in UnityPoint's Simulation Center for a series of two- day immersive experiences over the summer. Campers engaged in a series of nursing activities, including vital checks and bedside care, that culminated in first aid and CPR certifications. Denise Cundy, BSN, RN, chief nurse executive for UnityPoint Health, told Becker's 15 staff members were involved in the planning that fostered a "futuristic thinking" mindset. "As we think about workforce strategies, [it's not] just what do we need right now, but what do we need for the future as well?" she said. "That was really the impetus." Ms. Cundy said the first set of campers were children from the system's employees, and tweaks were made for the sessions open to the community — which were successful among campers, parents and staff alike. "What really filled my bucket as the chief nurse executive was seeing our own nurses so passionate about sharing their love for their profession," Ms. Cundy said. "And just seeing the fun and excitement, of course, on the campers, but it was really that desire to elevate our professions and just share it with others." The system plans to hold the camp next summer as well, with 18 campers already on the waitlist. "[We want to] bring those participants from this year that are interested back next year to do some advanced type of work, like actually shadowing on the floor, and those kinds of things," Ms. Cundy said. "And we're also tossing around an idea to do maybe a second career camp, so for someone who's in a different career looking for a change, or for that person who always wanted to go on healthcare, but they never did." n
