68 ORTHOPEDICS Spine practice merges with IPM Medical Group By Alan Condon C omprehensive Spine & Sports Center, a 20-provider group with locations in California and Las Vegas, has joined IPM Medical Group. CSSC is the clinical practice of Annu Navani, MD, who has become chief medical officer of IPM, a 29-physician multidisciplinary group with headquarters in Portland, Ore., and Walnut Creek, Calif., according to a July 28 news release. In her new role, Dr. Navani will work with medical staff, oversee quality and safety management and develop standards of care. "This strategic merger represents IPM's commitment to identifying growth partners who provide high-quality care with a focus on patient outcomes, while growing our strategic footprint in the chronic pain and delayed recovery space," Greg Garza, CEO of IPM said in the news release. "In addition to the ten CSSC clinics that will now be a part of our portfolio in Northern and Southern California, IPM will now have a CSSC clinic in Nevada, creating a multi-state platform and new opportunities to expand IPMs footprint rapidly outside of California." n Virginia ASC becomes 1st in the state to perform smart knee implant By Claire Wallace S t. Mary's ASC, a Henrico, Va.-based center and an affiliate of United Surgical Partners International, has become the first Virginia ASC to use a smart knee implant for total knee replacement. Matthew Dobzyniak, MD, performed the surgery in July, according to an Aug. 1 press release. "This is an important new advancement that we believe will enhance post-surgical care for our patients following total knee arthroplasty procedures," Shane Stanford, MSN, RN, administrator at St. Mary's ASC, said in the release. Smart knee implants are meant to improve recovery, provide more range of motion and fast-track physical therapy. They offer implantable sensors that measure walking speed, range of motion, step count and other metrics. n WellSpan expands minimally invasive spine surgery program to ASC, community hospital By Claire Wallace WellSpan is expanding its minimally invasive spine surgery program to two new locations, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital in Lancaster (Penn.) and Parkway Surgery Center in Hagerstown (Md.). Five physicians across WellSpan hospitals, the new surgery center and the community hospital are trained in minimally invasive procedures, according to an Aug. 17 press release. The minimally invasive procedure allows for faster recovery and better patient outcomes. n $16M orthopedic center, ASC planned for Colorado By Alan Condon B oulderCentre for Orthopedics and Spine is building a 37,000-square-foot facility with an ASC in Broomfield, Colo., the Boulder Daily Camera reported Aug. 15. The two-story facility, which will be adjacent to Children's Hospital North Campus, is projected to cost the 15-physician practice $16 million. The first floor will house the ASC, convalescent care center and future MRI area, according to the report. The second floor will feature the orthopedic clinic and physical therapy program. The facility is expected to open in spring 2023. n
