59 CMO / CARE DELIVERY Where are the 17 Leapfrog 'F' hospitals? Cailey Gleeson T he Leapfrog Group gave 17 hospitals fail- ing grades in its spring 2022 Hospital Safety Grades list, released May 10. The organization assigned letter grades to hospitals based on more than 30 measures of patient safety. In the latest update, grades were assigned to nearly 3,000 U.S. facilities. Among the hospitals evaluated, fewer than 1 per- cent received an "F." Here are this spring's "F" hospitals: Alabama North Alabama Shoals Hospital (Muscle Shoals) California Barstow Community Hospital Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital (Valencia) Pacifica Hospital of the Valley (Sun Valley) Pioneers Memorial Hospital (Brawley) San Joaquin General Hospital (French Camp) Florida Halifax Health Medical Center (Port Orange) Illinois Vista Medical Center East (Waukegan) Kansas Southwest Medical Center (Liberal) Louisiana Byrd Regional Hospital (Leesville) Jennings American Legion Hospital (Jennings) North Carolina Granville Medical Center (Oxford) Great Plains Regional Medical Center (Elk City) Texas Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-McKinney West Virginia CAMC General Hospital (Charleston) CAMC Teays Valley Hospital (Hurricane) Washington, D.C. Howard University Hospital n Pig virus may have contributed to pig heart transplant patient's death By Cailey Gleeson C ytomegalovirus, a common virus among pigs, may have been one of several factors in the death of the patient who received the first genetically modified heart, USA Today reported May 5. David Bennett, 57, of Maryland received the heart in a historic procedure Jan. 7 at Baltimore-based University of Maryland. Officials confirmed he died on March 8. An autopsy suggested that while the pig heart had been pumping well, the buildup of scar tissue was thickening the organ and preventing it from fully relaxing aer pushing blood through. A PCR analysis of tissue from the heart showed some viral DNA, though researchers found no clear signs of infection of the pig virus. Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, co-leader of the team that performed the trans- plant, told USAToday the virus clearly came from the pig, even though it was tested using "all available testing methods" before the procedure. Dr. Mohiuddin added while no scientific evidence suggests a pig cytomeg- alovirus infection could cause the thickening seen in Mr. Bennett's heart, it can't entirely be ruled out. n Top 5 most challenging requirements in 2021: Joint Commission By Erica Carbajal R educing the risk of hospital-acquired infections was the most challenging compliance standard for hospitals in 2021, ac- cording to The Joint Commission. To identify trends on challenging requirements, The Joint Com- mission collects data on organizations' compliance with standards, national patient safety goals and accreditation, and certification participation requirements. The organization identified the top five requirements for which hospitals were most frequently out of compliance, based on sur- veys and reviews from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. The top five most challenging requirements for hospitals in 2021: 1. The hospital reduces the risk of infections associated with medical equipment, devices and supplies. 2. Reduce the risk for suicide. 3. The hospital safely administers medications. 4. The hospital establishes and maintains a safe, functional environment. 5. The hospital manages risks associated with its utility systems. n
