35 DEVICES & IMPLANTS Top 15 medtech companies by revenue By Marcus Robertson T he COVID-19 pandemic struck the medical device industry harder than most in fiscal year 2021. Orthopedic device companies struggled when the COVID-19 pandemic forced hos- pitals and health systems to postpone elec- tive surgeries, though makers of diagnostic tests and some other kinds of medical equip- ment came out ahead. Seven of the top 15 medical device compa- nies by revenue posted losses in fiscal year 2020, but eight managed gains, according to Medical Product Outsourcing's 2021 report. e biggest gain among the top 15 was Abbott Labs, with a 13.2 percent revenue increase. e biggest loss, at negative 11.6 percent, was Johnson & Johnson, which nonetheless retained its No. 2 overall posi- tion from 2020. The device is made from Peek Optima LT1 or Peek Optima HA-enhanced material, according to a Feb. 1 news release. It is designed to create better bony apposition to the implant. The device is offered in multiple footprints and heights and lordosis. "The ClariVy Cervical IBF System is the first in a se- ries of differentiated interbody systems being de- veloped by VySpine. … This is just the next step in a series of exciting, innovative product launches scheduled for 2022," CEO Tom McLeer said in the release. n RTI Surgical creates spinoff companies for biologics, implants By Carly Behm RTI Surgical is splitting its company into independent entities focused on surgical implants and biologics. The tissues and biologics business will retain the RTI Surgical name, according to a Jan. 4 news release. Olivier Visa, CEO, will continue leading the Alachua, Fla.-based brand. It will fo- cus on allograft and xenograft tissue-based implants. The metals business, which focuses on implants and instru- ments for spine, orthopedic and cardiothoracic applications will be called Resolve Surgical Technologies. Megan Osorio, the current president of the metals business, will lead the company. n
