39 ASC USPI vs. Surgery Partners vs. SCA in Q3: 11 notes By Patsy Newitt D allas-based United Surgical Partners International, OptumHealth, which includes ASC chain Surgical Care Affiliates, and Brentwood, Tenn.-based Sur- gery Partners, are three of the largest ASC management companies. All three companies reported revenue gains in the third quarter ending Sept. 30. Here are 11 notes on the company's third-quarter financial results: USPI: 1. USPI reported net operating revenue at $666 million for the quarter, up 17.8 per- cent from $565 million in the same period last year. 2. Same-facility operating revenue increased 4.2 percent in the third quarter compared to the same period last year, with cases up 6.8 percent and revenue per case down 2.5 percent. 3. Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, de- preciation and amortization was $274 mil- lion for the second quarter. 4. At the end of the third quarter, USPI had interest in 318 ASCs and 24 surgical hospi- tals in 31 states. OptumHealth: 1. OptumHealth reported $13.8 billion in quarterly revenue, up 31.5 percent from $10.5 billion during the third quarter of 2020. 2. OptumHealth said revenue per customer jumped 30 percent year over year. e divi- sion grew to serve 99 million by the end of the third quarter, up 1 million from the same period last year. 3. Overall, Optum's quarterly revenue was $39.8 billion, up 13.9 percent, and earnings from operations hit $3.1 billion. Surgery Partners: 1. Revenue jumped 23.1 percent year to date and 12.7 percent in the third quarter com- pared to the same period last year. 2. Net loss attributable to common stock- holders hit $22.9 million in the third quarter. 3. Surgery Partners has deployed over $130 million on acquisitions and $225 million on potential single-site acquisitions under letters of intent, according to CFO Tom Cowhey. 4. Surgery Partners had 127 surgical facilities in its portfolio on Sept. 30, up from 126 at the end of the third quarter last year. n 15 of the most expensive ASC projects of 2021 By Marcus Robertson T he ambulatory surgery space has been active with new construction in 2021. Here are 15 of the most expensive, strictly outpatient projects in 2021: 1. Columbus-based Ohio State University Wexner Medi- cal Center opened a $137.9 million outpatient health and surgery center in New Albany, Ohio, Columbus Business First reported July 30. 2. Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis is planning to open a $75 million surgery center. 3. Covington, La.-based St. Tammany Health System is planning to build a $75 million surgical center. 4. Vancouver Clinic and healthcare real estate developer PMB broke ground March 17 on their $75 million clinic in Vancouver, Wash. 5. King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services is developing a $69 million ASC as part of a $375 million hospital in Washington, D.C., the Washington Business Journal reported March 12. 6. Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola Medicine is building a sur- gery center in Tinley Park, Ill., that will cost more than $69 million. 7. Eisenhower Health opened its expanded $68 million orthopedic center and ASC in Rancho Mirage, Calif. 8. Dartmouth-Hitchcock opened a $62 million ASC in Manchester, N.H. 9. HCA Healthcare West Florida is planning a $50 million surgical hospital, dubbed the Hospital for Endocrine Sur- gery, in Tampa, Fla. 10. Construction has begun on Mount Clemens, Mich.- based McLaren Macombs' $25 million surgery center. 11. Jacksonville, Fla.-based Jax Spine & Pain Centers broke ground Feb. 17 on a $25 million surgery center and medical office building in Jacksonville. 12. SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is building a $25 million ASC, the St. Louis Business Journal reported. 13. Spectrum Health has filed a certificate of need for a $23.2 million cardiovascular ASC in Grand Rapids, Mich. 14. Quincy, Ill.-based Blessing Health System is opening a $21 million ASC this fall. 15. Bozeman (Mont.) Health Cottonwood Clinic and Sur- gery Center, a $20 million project, opened April 19, NBC affiliate KHQ reported. n
