49 DEVICES & IMPLANTS 9 acquisitions totaling $6 billion in the spine and orthopedic device industry By Alan Condon A cquisitions are abundant within the spine and orthopedic device industry. Here are nine that were completed or announced in the last year that total more than $6 billion: 1. In October, Bioventus acquired Misonix, a spine-facing company, for a reported $518 million. e transaction is expected to add almost $80 million to Bioventus' revenue in 2021. 2. Bioventus has made a $50 million escrow payment as part of its option and equity pur- chase agreement with Israeli medtech compa- ny CartiHeal, signaling its intent to proceed with a reported $500 million acquisition. 3. Alphatec acquired EOS Imaging for a re- ported $116.9 million in May. e company is integrating EOS technology into its Alpha Informatix platform, adding spinal imaging and anatomical modeling. 4. SeaSpine bought 7D Surgical for $110 mil- lion in May. e company's flagship technol- ogy is a radiation-free tool designed to assist surgeons placing spinal implants. 5. In February, NuVasive paid $150 million to acquire Simplify Medical, which developed an artificial disc that is being evaluated for two-lev- el indications. 6. Smith+Nephew acquired Integra LifeScienc- es' extremity orthopedics business for $240 million in January. e deal includes a shoulder replacement system the company expects to launch in 2022. 7. Integra LifeSciences acquired regenerative medicine company ACell in January. Terms of the deal include $300 million in cash at closing and up to $100 million more in cash payments if certain revenue growth mile- stones are met. 8. In December, Zimmer Biomet acquired cardiothoracic surgery company A&E Med- ical Corp for $250 million. Revenue from the portfolio will be recognized in Zimmer Biomet's dental, spine and craniomaxillo- facial and thoracic business unit before the company spins off into two separate entities, with NewCo expected to take on the spine and dental units in mid-2022. 9. Stryker completed its $4 billion acquisi- tion of competitor Wright Medical Group in December. Stryker said Wright Medi- cal, which develops extremity and biologic products, has preoperative planning tech- nology and sufficient scale to enable the combined business to have a more focused business unit approach. n Former Medtronic, Zimmer Biomet exec named CEO of spine company By Alan Condon J eff Cambra, a medtech executive who spent 12 years at Medtronic and most recently worked for Zimmer Biomet, was appointed CEO of SpinaFX Medical, a Toronto-based minimally invasive image-guided therapy startup. Mr. Cambra has proven experience in managing product devel- opment, commercialization, and mergers and acquisitions, with a strong focus on interventional spine technologies and biologics, according to an Oct. 1 news release. Last year, he left his post as vice president, general manager of Medtronic's interventional therapies business to become vice pres- ident of Zimmer Biomet, where he led product development of its $5 billion reconstruction business. He also spent 13 years at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, now Pfizer, in var- ious leadership roles. SpinaFX Medical's minimally invasive image-guided ozone therapy is designed to relieve pain and disability for patients with herniated discs, according to the company's website. n Former NuVasive CFO joins Augmedics By Carly Behm A ugmedics named Raj Asarpota as executive vice president and CFO in a Sept. 15 announcement. Mr. Asarpota will lead Augmedics' global fi- nance organization and will be responsible for accounting, treasury, financial planning and analysis, tax and investor relations. His appointment completes Augmedics' senior leadership team. He previously held CFO and executive vice president roles at NuVasive and ApiJect Sys- tems America, which focuses on how medi- cines and vaccines are filled. At ApiJect, he was also head of technology. Augmedics is a surgical imaging company known for its augmented reality Xvision spine surgery system. n
