Genesis HealthCare System Overall rank: 13 n US launches ransomware website: 4 things to know By Hannah Mitchell T he U.S. government has launched a website to pro- vide resources to protect hos- pitals and other businesses from ransomware attacks. The Department of Homeland Se- curity, the Justice Department and other federal agencies partnered to launch StopRansomware.gov, according to a July 14 news release. Four things to know: 1. The website offers hospitals ran- somware resources, such as a check- list for responding to an attack, tips on how to protect your hospital from an attack, clear guidance on how to report an incident and more. 2. The website is the first to con- solidate resources from federal agencies. Before this website, hos- pital leaders may have had to fish for resources from the FBI, DHS or Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. 3. "Cybercriminals have targeted crit- ical infrastructure, small business- es, hospitals, police departments, schools, and more," DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said. "These at- tacks directly impact Americans' daily lives and the security of our Nation. I urge every organization across our country to use this new resource to learn how to protect themselves from ransomware and reduce their cyber- security risk." 4. Roughly $350 million in ransom was paid to hackers in 2020, a 300 percent increase from 2019. Attacks on small businesses make up 75 percent of all ransomware cases yet relatively go unnoticed, the release said. These resources will help these organizations and large companies take the necessary steps to protect their networks. n Ransomware attack on revenue cycle vendor exposes 1.2 million patients, employees By Hannah Mitchell A ransomware attack on Practicefirst Medical Management Solutions and PBS Medcode has left more than 1 million people exposed after hackers stole patient files. The vendor provides billing and coding services on behalf of hospitals and health systems, according to a data breach notice posted by Maine's attorney general. Four things to know: 1. Hackers infiltrated Practicefirst's systems Dec. 25, 2020, and launched a ran- somware attack. The firm discovered the breach Dec. 30, 2020. Hackers tried to steal files with patient and employee information. 2. Upon discovering the attack, the vendor shut down its systems, changed pass- words, alerted law enforcement and hired cybersecurity experts. 3. An investigation discovered that hackers copied protected health information, exposing 1,210,688 people. Stolen data included names, Social Security num- bers, bank account information, treatment-related information and more. 4. In response to the attack, the firm said it would deploy additional security proto- cols to protect its network, email environment and computer systems. n
