5 BECKER'S DENTAL + DSO REVIEW - VOL. 2021 NO. 3 DENTAL PROFESSIONALS US dental market expected to grow $15B+ by 2027: 3 factors driving demand By Gabrielle Masson T he U.S. dental market is estimated to hit $30.59 billion by 2027, from $15.57 billion in 2020, according to a news release from Research and Markets. Based on the company's estimates, the dental market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 10.13 percent during 2020-27. The factors expected to drive the demands of the U.S. dental equipment industry include: • Cosmetic surgery • The aging of the American population • Advancement in dental procedure due to ad- vanced technology Some other factors are poor oral hygiene, smok- ing habits and diabetes. Furthermore, the de- mands of prosthetic, preventive and surgical den- tistry will also contribute to this market. However, lack of proper reimbursement and the high cost of dental procedures hinder market growth. n The US dentist workforce – 7 key facts By Ariana Portalatin T he American Dental Association provides data on the dental workforce from the past decade, including gender, age and race. Seven key facts about the dental workforce: 1. The average age of dentists was 49.4 in 2010 and 49.3 in 2020. Overall, 21.6 percent of dentists are between 45 and 54 years old, down from 25.1 percent in 2010. Twenty-four percent of dentists are between the ages of 35 and 44, 21.1 percent are between 55 and 64, 17 percent are under 35, and 16.3 percent are 65 and older. 2. The average retirement age for dentists in 2020 was 68.2. 3. The majority of dentists in 2020 were white and Asian, making up 88.2 percent of the dental workforce. 4. The amount of women in the dental workforce is increasing. The percentage of women increased from 24.1 percent in 2010 to 34.5 percent in 2020. The number of female dental school graduates also increased from 46 percent in 2009 to 50.6 percent in 2019. 5. The average number of hours dentists work in a week increased slightly from 34.8 in 2010 to 35.7 in 2019. 6. In 2019, 50 percent of private practice dentists were the sole dentist in their office. 7. The number of dentists per 100,000 population was 61 in 2020, but the ratio varies in each state. Washington, D.C., had the highest ratio at 104, and Arkansas had the lowest ratio at 40.9. Overall, the ratio increased for most states between 2010 and 2020. n Pennsylvania dentist surrenders license after state board deems behavior unprofessional By Erica Carbajal W ade Newman, DDS, former owner of Bellefonte (Pa.) Family Dentistry, voluntarily surrendered his license to the state's dentistry board in March af- ter it ruled he acted unprofessionally by engaging in sex- ual misconduct with two patients, the Centre Daily Times reported May 5. Dr. Newman may apply to have his dental license reinstat- ed after five years, according to a state document cited by the news outlet. The misconduct with the two patients occurred more than four years ago, according to the report. In July 2018, Dr. Newman was found not guilty of all charges after being accused of raping one of the women. The woman settled a lawsuit against the former dentist in March 2020. The attorneys for Dr. Newman and the woman who filed suit against him declined a request for comment from the Centre Daily Times. n
