Utah, 31 n How DJO is making its push into the ASC market By Patsy Newitt M edical device company DJO's investment in Insight Medical Systems is its latest move to break into the orthopedic ASC space. The computer-assisted surgery technology market has been growing at a compound annual rate of 32 percent, according to a March 30 news release. That growth, coupled with an increased shift of total joint replacements from hospitals to ASCs, has many surgeons thinking about adopting new technology in their own practices. However, ASCs are often held back by the cost and size of technolo- gies like robots. Surgeons have to balance the clinical benefit of technology with the potential added cost and time associated with acquiring it. DJO's strategic investment will let Insight leverage its sales chan- nels to launch ARVIS, an augmented reality system with proprietary hardware for joint replacements. ARVIS will also be compatible with Empowr, DJO's single-tray implant system for hip and knee replacements. In the past year, DJO grew its Empowr line with two systems to boost surgical efficiency. It also acquired Trilliant Surgical, a leader in foot and ankle implants, and Stryker's STAR ankle and finger arthroplasty lines. n Dr. Hamid Abbasi demonstrates multilevel OLLIF at Minnesota ASC By Alan Condon N eurosurgeon Hamid Abbasi, MD, PhD, CMO of Burnsville, Minn.-based Inspired Spine, hosted a cadaver lab and surgery observation, where he performed two oblique lateral lumbar interbody fusions. Attendees observed Dr. Abbasi perform a multilevel OLLIF in less than an hour at an ASC, where he demonstrated potential advantages over traditional spinal fusion, according to a March 23 news release. On average, the OLLIF technique takes 40 minutes, while open spinal fusions can take between two and four hours, according to Dr. Abbasi. "Although hosting a cadaver lab is resource intensive, it is the best way to ensure that surgeons can initially learn and practice the OLLIF technique in a safe and controlled environment," Dr. Abbasi said. "Inspired Spine continues to teach surgeons free of charge, as its primary mission is to elevate and improve the standards of minimally invasive spine care." Inspired Spine also showcased its newly launched Trident sacroiliac joint fusion system. n
