46 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT Ohio orthopedic group to open $100M hospital By Alan Condon A kron, Ohio-based Crystal Clinic Orthopae- dic Center plans to open a $100 million hospital for orthopedic, reconstructive and plastic surgery in the fall. The 165,000-square-foot facility in Fairlawn, Ohio, will include 60 private patient rooms and 12 oper- ating rooms equipped with Stryker's Mako system and the ExactechGPS guided personalized surgery system for joint replacement procedures, accord- ing to a March 9 news release. Once opened, Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Hospital will replace the practice's current inpatient and surgical facility in Akron. Crystal Clinic performs more than 17,000 surgeries annually. It is the only hospital in Ohio to receive Joint Commission certifications in total hip, total knee, total shoulder and spinal fusion procedures, according to the report. n Emory, Falcons open $15M orthopedics and spine center By Alan Condon T he Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center has opened at the Atlanta Falcons' Flowery Branch, Ga., training facility, Fox5 Atlanta reported Feb. 25. Spanning 29,000 square feet, the $15 million facility provides care to Falcons players as well as residents from the community. The clinic also houses the Emory Sports Perfor- mance and Research Center, which will work to ad- vance research around common sports medicine issues. The facility is equipped with several technol- ogies for biomechanics, neuroscience, virtual reali- ty and performance training. "We don't want people to think this is just for the Atlanta Falcons," Scott Boden, MD, director of the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center, told Fox5 At- lanta. "In fact, the majority of patients here will not be Atlanta Falcons; they'll be residents from the community." n Rothman Orthopaedics CEO retires after 22 years By Alan Condon M ichael West, CEO of Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia, retired March 31 after 22 years with the practice. Mr. West served as CEO since 1999, when the group had seven physicians and one office. Under his leadership, Rothman Orthopaedics has grown to include about 200 physicians and more than 90 locations, in- cluding 17 ASCs, two specialty hospitals and 14 medical office buildings across Southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Florida. "It has been a great honor and privilege to work with the world class physicians of Rothman Orthopaedics, and to lead and de- velop the exceptional management team and staff during my tenure," Mr. West said. "I believe that Rothman will continue to be a leader in healthcare as it expands to additional communi- ties throughout the country." Mr. West will continue to serve as executive adviser through June 30. n UPMC to open 7-surgeon orthopedic practice with spine care: 3 details By Alan Condon P ittsburgh-based UPMC opened an orthopedic practice in Harrisburg, Pa., on April 1. Three things to know: 1. The practice will provides the full spectrum of orthopedic care, including spine and total joint surgery. 2. Seven surgeons practice at the facility: Steven Wolf, MD; Mi- chael Werner, MD; Nathan Wool, MD; Casey Kiser, MD; Thomas Chu, DO; Oumou Belemou, DPM; and Torre Ruth, MD. 3. UPMC West Shore Orthopaedics share the same location as Arlington Orthopedics-UPMC, which also has seven surgeons, according to its website. "The new UPMC West Shore Orthopaedics practice further strengthens our network of employed and independent ortho- paedic providers committed to giving our patients exceptional spine, bone and joint care," Philip Guarneschelli, president of Harrisburg-based UPMC Pinnacle, said in a March 8 news re- lease. n
