15 BECKER'S DENTAL + DSO REVIEW - VOL. 2021 NO. 2 Sentinel sells MB2 Dental By Gabrielle Masson N ew York City-based Sentinel Capital Partners announced Feb. 1 the sale of Carrollton, Texas-based MB2 Dental, a dental partnership organization. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. During its partnership with Sentinel, MB2 grew from 85 affiliated practices to 275, and expanded from supporting practices in six states to 24 states. "Working alongside Sentinel, MB2's first institutional investor, has been extremely rewarding and has given us the opportunity to cap- italize on the strengths of our unique business model," said Chris Villanueva, DMD, founder and CEO of MB2. "We expect to continue expanding our platform in existing and new geographies, and we thank Sentinel for helping take us this far." Dr. Villanueva, MB2 management and dentist owners with the orga- nization have reinvested a substantial percentage of their equity in the new ownership structure. n Heartland Dental unveils accelerated growth plans for 2021 By Carly Behm E ffingham, Ill.-based DSO Heartland Dental expects to build on its 2020 growth, according to a Jan. 27 news release. In 2020, Heartland Dental supported more than 150 new offices and added more than 100 new dentists. In 2021, the DSO plans to advance its de novo and single-office affili- ations. Heartland's affiliation team is working with brokers, investment bankers and financial advisers along with doctor owners to create strat- egies and opportunities for clients. Heartland Dental currently supports more than 1,800 dentists in more than 1,150 offices across 38 states. n 'Dental industry is consolidating': Private equity group invests in Colorado DSO By Gabrielle Masson L os Angeles-based Varsity Healthcare Partners has invested in Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Peak Dental Services, reports The Gazette. Varsity declined to say how much it invested, but the private equity investment firm's website says the company makes investments of $10 million to $60 million in healthcare providers, payers and service providers. Peak Dental Services, started in 2008, owns or operates 35 practices with 65 dentists and 400 employees. "Historically, we have acquired and started new practices and we plan to accelerate that with 12 to 15 practices a year," said A.J. Peak, CEO of Peak Dental Services. "The dental industry is consolidating much like other parts of the healthcare market. Our goal is to keep or accelerate the pace of our expansion. We could expand to 50 to 60 practices in Colorado, but we need to go out of state and are making lots of efforts to do so." Varsity's investment is expected to finance acquisitions and new practices for five years or more, Mr. Peak told The Gazette. n DENTAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS (contd. from previous page) The organization's practices provide general, cosmetic and family dentistry as well as sleep apnea treatment. Viraj Desai, DMD, founded the DSO in 2017. Tomalty Dental Care (Boynton Beach, Fla.). Tomalty Dental Care is a fast- growing dental service organization. Founded in 2013 by Sean Tomalty, DMD, the organization now has 15 locations and 150 employees in Southeast Florida. During a seven-month period from 2019 to 2020, Dr. Tomalty doubled the group's operations by adding seven practices. Total Health Dental Care (Oakland, Calif.). Total Health Dental Care remained open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to serve its community with emergency and preventive care. The DSO has 12 offices throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, each equipped with an extraoral dental suction system and an air-purification system. Unified Dental Care (Detroit). Unified Dental Care has seven offices throughout Michigan, where it is actively seeking to grow its presence. The DSO serves more than 100,000 patients throughout the state. In 2019, Delta Dental's Healthy Kids Dental program recognized Unified Dental Care for providing the most dental services to patients ages 13 to 18. Valley Endodontics & Oral Surgery (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Valley Endodontics was founded in 1996 and has grown to include 11 practices throughout the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas. With more than 125 team members, including 20 dental specialists, the DSO has become Arizona's largest specialty practice. Continuously updating skills to better serve patients, the organization strives to be at the forefront of endodontic, oral surgery and dental implant technology. n
