28 ORTHOPEDICS 14 updates on orthopedic surgery centers By Eric Oliver Here are 14 updates from Becker's ASC Re- view from mid-November to mid-January: 1. Leawood, Kan.-based ValueHealth is de- veloping a total joint-focused surgery center in Chadds Ford, Pa. 2. Matthew Kraay, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Cleveland-based University Hospitals, told Becker's ASC Review what he believes surgeons will need to succeed with outpatient total joint replacements in 2021. 3. Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic In- stitute is developing a 371,000-square-foot healthcare facility in Orlando, Fla., that'll feature an outpatient surgery center. 4. An orthopedic and spine hospital co-de- veloped by Ascension Florida and Gulf Coast and Healthcare Outcomes Performance Co., in conjunction with Southeast Orthopedic Specialists, opened Jan. 4. 5. Towson, Md.-based SurgCenter Develop- ment is moving forward with a new ASC development in New Hampshire, its first of 2021. 6. Columbus, Ohio-based Mount Carmel Health System bought a stake in orthopedic- focused Columbus-based Surgery Center at Easton. 7. Bradenton, Fla.-based Coastal Orthope- dics' headquarters development could be one of the largest projects in 2021. 8. ere are more than 170 ASCs that per- form minimally invasive spine surgery. 9. A group of orthopedic specialists are build- ing a surgery center next to Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Penrose-St. Francis Health Ser- vices' in-development third hospital campus. 10. Orthopedic surgeon compensation will be affected by COVID-19, ending a generally upward trend from the last several years. 11. Harpreet Bawa, MD, of Van Nuys-based Southern California Orthopedic Institute is expected to perform the San Fernando Val- ley region's first outpatient hip replacement using Stryker's Mako robot. n Oregon surgery center has record year of total joint replacements By Carly Behm S alem, Ore.-based Willamette Surgery Center had a record year, performing 254 total joint replacements in 2020, according to a Jan. 6 news release. By November 2020, the center had reached 200 total joint replacements in the year, the release said. Since 1999, the center has performed 1,000 surgeries. The center marked its 200th total joint replacement with a donation of 200 meals to the Salem Keizer Meals on Wheels pro- gram in November, the release said. n 1st AR knee replacement performed in US by HSS surgeon By Eric Oliver N ew York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery orthopedic surgeon Jonathan Vigdorchik, MD, performed the first knee-re- placement procedure in the U.S. assisted by augmented reality, The Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 21. Dr. Vigdorchik replaced the knees of two patients in December in what is believed to be the first procedure assisted by Medacta's NextAR augmented-reality platform in the country. The platform includes glasses that allow Dr. Vigdorchik to see and follow operating plans projected on the patient. Specifically, the platform assists surgeons in precisely removing bone and cartilage and in positioning the knee implant. "At many time points during the operation it's actually providing me information, making sure that my cuts are degree for degree, millimeter for millimeter, accurate," Dr. Vigdorchik said to WSJ. Medacta's platform received FDA-approval in July 2020. It was first used in Australia in September 2020. n
