Five things to know: 1. Optum reported $34.9 billion in third quarter revenue and $2.6 billion in operating earnings. 2. OptumHealth, which includes surgery center chain Deerfield, Ill.-based Surgical Care Affiliates, reported a 25 percent increase in revenue per customer served in the third quarter over the same period last year. The company attributed growth to an increase in patients served. 3. OptumHealth also reported care patterns were "significantly closer to normal levels" when compared with the second quarter. Like most care providers, the company's expected care volume was disrupted during the pandemic. 4. For the third quarter, OptumHealth reported nearly $10.5 bil- lion in revenue, a 29 percent increase over the same period last year. OptumHealth reported $28.8 billion in 2020 so far. 5. OptumHealth served 98 million people in the third quarter, up from 95 million over the same period last year. n ASCs projected to take 68% of orthopedic surgeries by mid-decade — 5 insights By Angie Stewart A SCs will perform an estimated 68 percent of orthopedic surgeries by the mid-2020s, according to Research and Markets' "2020 Ambulatory Surgery Center Market Report" pub- lished Oct 21. Five additional insights: 1. ASCs currently perform about 41 percent of all surgical procedures. 2. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, 100 percent of ASCs stopped elective surgeries. 3. Seventy-three percent of ASCs halted semi- elective surgeries due to COVID-19. 4. One-third of ASCs suspended non-elective surgeries. 5. Seventy-three percent of hospital ASCs are operated as physician joint ventures. n
