'Personal choice' ranks in top 3 By Angie Stewart T he COVID-19 pandemic was the leading reason for physicians' income limitations in 2020, followed by "personal choice" and "patient volume/ load," according to e Medicus Firm's "2020 Practice Preference & Relocation Survey." e Medicus Firm, a national physician search company, collected survey respons- es from 2,464 providers in its proprietary physician database and used American Medical Association data in June and July. In 2019, 23.1 percent of respondents pointed to a decrease in reimbursement as the leading cause of income limitation. In 2020, just 6.4 percent attributed a decrease in reimbursement to income limitation. Causes of physician income limitations in 2020, ranked: 1. e pandemic: 50.5 percent 2. Personal choice: 10 percent 3. Patient volume/load: 8.1 percent 4. Other: 7.3 percent 5. Reimbursement decreases: 6.4 percent 6. Administrative work: 4.5 percent 7. Competition with other physicians: 3.3 percent 8. Overhead increases: 2.6 percent 9. No impact to income: 2.6 percent 10. Payer mix: 2.3 percent 11. Employer issue: 1.6 percent 12. Contract: 0.7 percent 13. Malpractice premium costs: 0.4 per- cent n Maryland surgery center launches women's wellness program By Eric Oliver R ockville, Md.-based Center for Innovative GYN Care launched the CIGC Wellness Center, an ASC-based series of programs, The Daily Record reported. The program will expand access to holistic care for women. The ASC will provide pain management, physical therapy, nutritional coach- ing, fitness training and psychotherapy. The program was created to provide care to women in need. n Kaiser closing ASC By Eric Oliver O akland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente is closing an ASC and end- ing gastroenterology services at Wailuku (Hawaii) Medical Office, The Maui News reports. Surgical and GI services will be moved into Maui Memorial Medical Center. Kaiser will eliminate 11 staff and technician positions and 17 nursing posi- tions as a result of the change. The health system said there should be no effect on patient scheduling. The system said it made the changes to avoid having to upgrade the aging Wailuku Medical Office. Maui Memorial Medical Center "is more modern, uses the latest medical technology and has more space and greater patient capacity," the system said in a statement. Kaiser is working with employee union representatives to possibly relocate some of the eliminated staff positions or provide compensation or benefit packages to the eliminated employees." n Physician shot in Minnesota hospital parking ramp during robbery: 4 details By Laura Dyrda A Minnesota physician was robbed and shot in a hospital parking ramp on Sept. 14, according to a report in the Star Tribune. Four details: 1. The Star Tribune reported the physician was robbed outside of Edina, Minn.-based M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital and then shot in the head. 2. The doctor suffered non-critical injuries and received medical treatment. 3. Roads and highways around the hospital and surrounding medical and retail center were put on lockdown after the shooting while police searched for the suspect. 4. The physician's identity has not been revealed. n
