News & World Report ranked 50 pediatric hospi- tals for the treatment of serious neurological condi- tions such as epilepsy, head trauma and brain tumors. e 2020-21 rankings, released June 15, were largely based on survival rates at each hospital aer complex surgery, compli- cations and infection prevention, as well as the availability of specialized epilepsy treatment and rehabilitation. Daniel Yoshor, MD, was appointed chair of the department of neurosurgery in the Perelman School of Medicine at the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, effective July 1. 2. Lakeshore Orthopaedics in Manitowoc, Wis., onboarded Richard Manos, MD. 3. Frank Schwab, MD, was appointed vice chair of the New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery Innovation Institute. 4. Miami-based Baptist Health South Florida hired Michael Mc- Dermott, MD, as CMO of Miami Neuroscience Institute. 5. Brain and Spine Surgeons of New York in Harrison appoint- ed Virany Hillard, MD, as medical director. 6. The Minimally Invasive Brain and Spine Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore hired neurosurgeon Joshua Lim, MD. 7. Neurosurgeon Brian Farrell, MD, is providing care at a new practice in Murray, Ky. 8. Keith Norvill, DO, joined CHI St. Vincent Neurosurgery Clinic in Hot Springs, Ark. 9. Hammond, La.-based North Oaks Neurosurgery Clinic hired Lon Alexander, MD. 10. Elizabeth Tyler-Kabara, MD, was appointed chief of pediat- ric neurosurgery at Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas in Austin. 11. Cape Fear Valley Neurosurgery in Fayetteville, N.C., hired Melissa Stamates, MD. 12. Ali Raja, MD, joined Arkansas Surgical Hospital in Little Rock. 13. Axis Spine Center, co-owned by Roland Kent, MD, is mov- ing from Post Falls to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. 14. Northern Rockies Orthopaedics in Missoula, Mont., on- boarded Joel Torretti, MD. 15. Missoula (Mont.) Bone & Joint added Zackery Witte, MD, to its practice. 16. BoulderCentre for Orthopedics & Spine in Boulder, Colo., added Patrick Curry, MD, to its surgical team. 17. Mahesh Karandikar, MD, PhD, joined McLaren Flint (Mich.), a 278-bed hospital as part of Grand Blanc, Mich.-based McLar- en Health Care. 18. Alejandro Castellvi, MD, joined Mercy Clinic Neurosurgery in Rogers, Ark. n 19% of orthopedic surgeons have $5M+ net worth By Laura Dyrda N early one-fifth of orthopedic surgeons have a net worth over $5 million, according to the Medscape Physician Debt and Net Worth Report 2020. The top five specialties with the highest percentage of re- spondents with a $5 million net worth or more were: 1. Orthopedics: 19 percent 2. Plastic surgery: 16 percent 3. Gastroenterology: 16 percent 4. Cardiology: 15 percent 5. Dermatology: 15 percent On the other end of the spectrum, 24 percent of orthope- dic surgeons said their net worth was under $500,000. n
