23 Executive Briefing with workers, as well as listening to their concerns, can help reduce their anxiety. Workers will understand that leadership may not be able to address all of their issues but will be grateful that their voices are part of the conversation. Topics of discussion can include ways that workers can protect their families by creating separate living spaces and other measures as well as protocols for when they arrive home, such as removing clothing and showering immediately. Providing workers with the ability to get adequate sleep and rest breaks, the opportunity to attend to their personal needs and those of their families, and healthy meals during their shifts are as important as supplying them with personal protective equipment. Knowing that their leadership is doing everything possible to support them can help give workers a sense of control and trust. Health workers are extraordinarily resilient, and many will cope with these challenges; we should absolutely celebrate the resourcefulness, commitment, and dedication of those who have devoted themselves to caring for the sick. But we should not forget that they are human, too, and make sure that help is available for them. Health care system leaders who put in place a comprehensive mental health and well-being plan for their workers now as well as post- crisis will help employees recover and grow in their jobs. Knowing that leadership supports them professionally and personally will enhance performance, making our health care systems stronger and more resilient in the years ahead. n Sources: 1.
