64 ORTHOPEDICS $209M Sanford expansion to add orthopedic hospital, 2 clinics By Alan Condon S ioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health outlined plans March 3 to build an orthopedic hospital and two clinics as part of a $209.5 million expansion over the next three years, reports the Argus Leader. The expansion aims to boost the health system's existing service lines to keep up with demands of the growing population. Located at the health system's main campus, the 163,000-square- foot orthopedic hospital will feature 12 operating rooms. Construc- tion will begin in summer 2021 with opening expected by 2023. The project includes a 42,000-square-foot clinic in southeast Sioux Falls — due for completion in 2021 — that will provide care to the city's outskirts and Northwest Iowa. The second clinic, a 16,000-square-foot facility in Harrisburg, S.D., will break ground in spring and open in a year. Both clinics will fea- ture family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and a Lewis Drug center. Sanford Heart Hospital is also undergoing an expansion, add- ing 16 patient rooms, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. n Muve Health opens hyper- specialty orthopedic center — 4 things to know By Angie Stewart M uve Health opened a hyper-specialty total joint re- placement center in Warminster, Pa., the organization announced March 16. Four things to know: 1. Redeemer Health System will provide around-the-clock nurs- ing care at Muve Health Warminster, which is Muve Health's first facility in the greater Philadelphia area. 2. The outpatient surgery center logged its first total joint re- placement in December 2019. 3. In addition to luxury stay suites, Muve Health Warminster offers an education program intended to optimize patient recovery. 4. ValueHealth is the parent of Muve Health. Both are head- quartered in Leawood, Kan. n 3 things to know about orthopedic surgeon salary growth & hospital revenue generated By Rachel Popa O rthopedic surgeons generated over $3 mil- lion on average for their hospitals in 2019, according to a survey conducted by physi- cian search firm Merritt Hawkins. 1. Orthopedic surgeons were one of the top-paid specialists, earning $533,000 on average. 2. Orthopedic surgeons were one of the top revenue- generating specialties for hospitals, generating $3,286,764 on average, up from $2,746,605 in 2016. 3. According to Merritt Hawkins' 2019 review of physician and advanced practitioner recruiting in- centives, orthopedic surgeons were one of the top 20 most requested specialties by physician search firms, landing in the 13th spot. n Massachusetts orthopedic group halts physician pay, furloughs employees due to COVID-19: 4 details By Laura Dyrda N ew England Orthopedic Surgeons in Spring- field, Mass., furloughed more than half its workforce, according to a Mass Live report. Four things to know: 1. The practice is furloughing 168 employees as it complies with state and federal recommendations to postpone elective medical procedures. 2. The 18 physicians associated with the practice won't receive compensation "for the foreseeable future," according to the practice's president John Corsetti, MD. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker issued emergency orders to cancel nonessential elective procedures on March 15. 3. Some employees will be maintained on reduced wages. 4. The practice plans to rehire the furloughed work- ers when elective surgeries start again, and expects practice revenue to recover in three to four months, according to the report. n
