DEVICES & IMPLANTS 32 California spine group joins study on 2 total disc replacement devices — 5 details By Angie Stewart T he Anand Spine Group in Los Angeles is participating in an Inves- tigational Device Exemption study examining two cervical total disc replacement devices, according to a Jan. 21 announcement published by Patch. Five things to know: 1. Sponsored by Centinel Spine and monitored by the FDA, the study will evaluate the prodisc C Vivo and prodisc C SK devices' safety and effective- ness in treating two-level symptomatic cervical disc disease. The devices will be compared with an FDA-approved total disc replacement device. 2. In use since 2009, the prodisc C Vivo is the most commonly implanted total disc replacement product outside of the U.S. 3. The prodisc C SK is a variation of the prodisc C Nova implant, which has been used outside the U.S. for about a decade. 4. The study will involve participants between the ages of 18 and 69 years old who show signs of symptomatic cervical disc disease or other poten- tial spinal conditions. 5. Neel Anand, MD, an orthopedic surgery professor and the director of spine trauma at Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, will serve as the study's lead investigator. n Medtronic, Orthofix & more: 4 recent spine, orthopedic device company acquisitions By Alan Condon Here are four spine and orthopedic device company acquisitions an- nounced or completed in the past month. Medtronic acquired Stimgenics, developer of the Differential Target Mul- tiplexed spinal cord stimulation therapy, which is used to treat patients with chronic pain. Orthofix signed an asset purchase agreement with German company Wittenstein SE to acquire its Fitbone platform, which has potential ap- plications for early onset scoliosis. The transaction includes $18 million in cash closing considerations and a manufacturing supply contract with Wittenstein SE. Anika Therapeutics acquired sports medicine company Parcus Medical for $35 million with $60 million in potential incentives. Parcus Medical's product portfolio facilitates surgeries of the shoulder, knee, hip and distal extremities. Maruho Medical acquired orthopedic surgical device company Valeris Medical in Marietta, Ga. The acquisition expands Maruho Medical's port- folio for soft tissue repair procedures. n How spine performed in the past quarter: 6 key updates on who is up, who is down By Laura Dyrda T he past quarter has been varied for ortho- pedic and spine companies, with some reporting spine sales down slightly while others had significant growth. Here is a short update on spine sales for six com- panies: 1. Johnson & Johnson reported spine sales dropped 2 percent worldwide last year, hitting $3.2 billion. Spine sales in the fourth quarter were down 1.8 percent, driven by international declines, and U.S. spine sales were also down 1.6 percent in the fourth quarter. 2. Stryker reported neurotechnology and spine sales at $3.1 billion, a 19.2 percent increase for the full year of 2019. For the fourth quarter, the com- pany reported $290 million in spine sales, an 18.6 percent increase. 3. Medtronic reported second quarter spine reve- nue at $692 million, a 5.5 percent year-over-year increase. When combined with the sales from the enabling technologies used in spine, including ro- botics, navigation, imaging and powered surgical instruments, the spine revenue and U.S. spine rev- enue grew in the high single digits. 4. NuVasive's preliminary full year 2019 revenue hit $1.17 billion, a 6 percent increase over 2018. International revenue for the year was up 10 per- cent and U.S. spinal hardware jumped 7 percent for the year. 5. Zimmer Biomet spine and craniomaxillofacial sales were down 2.2 percent to $747 million for the year. However, the company aims to continue focusing on the line. 6. Alphatec reported a 30 percent increase in reve- nue for 2019, hitting $113.1 million to $113.5 mil- lion based on preliminary results. e company expects 2020 revenue to jump to $130 million to $134 million, a 19 percent to 21 percent growth as it plans eight to 10 new product launches in the coming months. n
