Nearly 80%
of healthcare
managers have
accidentally
emailed
sensitive,
confidential info

T
hough the rise in cybersecurity inci-
dents has created an increased push for
hospitals to be more vigilant, clinicians
and executives continue to fall into cyberse-
curity traps.
In the 2019 e Security of Confidential Docu-
ments in the Workplace Report commissioned
by Shred-it and conducted by Ponemon Insti-
tute, executives revealed mistakes they make
that may contribute to data breaches.
Below are five key things to know:
1. Around eight in 10 healthcare managers
reported that they have accidentally sent an
email that contained sensitive or confidential
information to the wrong person.
2. Sixty-seven percent of healthcare executives
indicated that they are not confident in their
organization's ability to govern the use, protec-
tion and disposal of paper documents.
3. Majority of healthcare managers (70 per-
cent) have picked up or seen a paper docu-
ment in a public space that held sensitive or
confidential information. Only 36 percent
shred confidential paper documents aer re-
viewing them.
4. More than 60 percent of healthcare manag-
ers are concerned that employees or contrac-
tors have printed and le behind documents
that could lead to data breaches.
5. Seventy-one percent of healthcare data breach-
es in the last year involved the loss or the of pa-
per documents or electronic devices. n
