57 CIO / HEALTH IT 4 alerts, tools that hospitals are adding to their EHRs By Jackie Drees H ere are four digital alerts and tools that hospitals and health systems have recently developed or integrated with their EHR systems. 1. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers created an algorithm that can mine EHR data to pinpoint pediatric oncology patients that would be a good fit for potential clinical studies. 2. Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente added a flag to its EHR to notify physicians when a patient has an abnormal test result for chronic kidney disease. 3. Vanderbilt University Medical Center launched a test pilot of its EHR voice assistant VEVA, which can analyze and relay patient information in the EHR so clinicians don't have to look it up themselves. 4. Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare added CancerIQ's genetic screening software to its Epic EHR as part of its population health initiative to better identify and treat cancer. n Texas healthcare provider pays hackers in ransomware attack By Mackenzie Garrity R owlett, Texas-based Berry Family Services, which pro- vides health services to people with disabilities, was hit with a ransomware attack July 10 that barred providers from accessing computer systems. Officials decided to pay the undisclosed ransom to continue supporting local community-based services and living pro- grams. Berry Family Services said the cybercriminals were seek- ing to extort money rather than gain access to patient data. The ransomware attack also encrypted 1,751 patients' informa- tion. Patient data that could have been exposed in the ransom- ware attack included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical insurance information and related health information. Berry Family Services said there was no evidence that the infor- mation has been misused. The organization is offering affected patients one year of credit monitoring and identity theft protec- tion services. The company has also taken steps to improve its cybersecurity so a similar incident does not happen again. n
