57 ORTHOPEDICS Florida passes overnight stays for ASCs, mandates child safety rules — 4 details By Eric Oliver A Florida law permitting ASCs to keep patients for up to 24 hours passed state legislature on June 25. Four details: 1. Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 843 into law fol- lowing years of debate, according to local news affiliate FOX 35. He signed 14 other bills the same day. 2. HB 843 eliminates a requirement that an ASC patient must be ad- mitted and discharged the same day. 3. Under the new law, Florida's Agency for Health Care Administra- tion must establish a set of rules promoting safety for pediatric ASC patients. 4. The comprehensive legislation also creates provisions regarding dental services, hospital quality report cards, physician access in a hospital setting, hospital observation status and more. n Optum names new president, COO By Laura Dyrda U nitedHealth Group named Daniel Schumacher president and COO of Optum in an organizationwide leader- ship transition. Mr. Schumacher previously served as presi- dent and COO of UnitedHealthcare and will replace Dirk McMahon as president and COO of Optum. Mr. McMahon was named CEO of UnitedHealthcare after CEO Steve Nelson retired. In his new role, Mr. Schumacher oversees OptumInsight, Optum Technology and overall Optum operations, which includes Optum- Care and Surgical Care Affiliates. He joined UnitedHealth Group in 1999 and has held various leadership roles since then. He takes on Optum's leadership role during a time of change; Optum closed its acquisition of DaVita Medical Group, which has practices in five states, on June 19. n Pain management investment firm acquires Texas ASC — 3 things to know By Eric Oliver A pain management-focused investment and management company acquired Conroe, Texas-based VIP Surgical Center. What you should know: 1. San Antonio-based Spindletop Pain Management Holdings and Tricity Pain Associates partnered in 2018 to build a semi-regional network of pain management practices. 2. e acquisition of VIP Surgical Center expands the partnership into the greater Houston market. 3. Spindletop Pain Management Holdings and Tricity Pain Associates has 19 clinicians and 13 affiliated clinics, including three ASCs in Texas.
