Four things to know: 1. The Spine Center at Pennsylvania Hospital offers inpatient and out- patient care, nonsurgical treatment, pain management and imaging ca- pabilities. 2. The facility includes space for pa- tient visits, and affiliated physicians will offer virtual visits from the loca- tion. 3. Penn Medicine's spine program serves patients from across the re- gion, including in Central Pennsylva- nia and New Jersey. 4. The center's multidisciplinary team includes specialists in orthopedics, neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine, pain management, radiol- ogy and others on site. NuVasive is incorporating the implant into its interbody portfolio. n Neurosurgeon-generated revenue for hospitals jumps 40.5% in 3 years to $3.4M By Laura Dyrda P hysicians and surgeons generate millions of dollars in revenue for affiliated hospitals each year, with neurosurgeons ranking No. 3 among the top revenue generators, according to a new survey from Merritt Hawkins and AMN Healthcare. The average physician generates around $2.3 million annually on behalf of their hospi- tals in both net inpatient and outpatient revenue. The revenue calculated includes hos- pital admissions, tests, treatments, prescriptions and procedures performed or ordered. While cardiovascular surgeons topped the list of highest revenue generators, neurosurgeons came in third, generating $3.4 million on average per year for their hospitals. "e value of physician care is not only related to the quality of patient outcomes," said Merritt Hawkins Executive Vice President Travis Singleton. "Physicians continue to drive the financial health and viability of hospitals, even in a healthcare system that is evolving towards value-based payments." In 2019, neurosurgeons generated 40.5 percent more in revenue for affiliated hospitals than in 2016. e report also conducted the cost/benefit of physicians that provide the best return on investment based on their salaries and revenue generated. Neurosurgeons report an av- erage salary of $687,000 salary, generating five times their salary in hospital revenue. In comparison, family physicians generate nine times their average starting salary in hospital revenue. n
