DJO headquarters to leave San
Diego for Dallas: 5 things to
know
By Laura Dydra
D
JO plans to move its
headquarters from San
Diego to Dallas this
year.
Five things to know:
1. The orthopedic t e chnol-
ogy company made the stra-
tegic decision to relocate its
headquarters into the Dallas
market, which it believes has
a larger pool of talent and can
provide greater customer ac-
cess.
2. DJO's Bracing and Supports
and Consumer business units
will remain in San Diego in
an improved space. Mr. Shir-
ley said the company plans to
build its bracing business in
Southern California.
3. It's new global headquar-
ters is designed to support
employee well-being and en-
courage collaboration. The
location will also include a cus-
tomer experience center.
4. Several current employees
will move to the new location,
and DJO will create hundreds
of new jobs in the area. The
company also opened a dis-
tribution center in Fort Worth,
Texas, earlier this year, and it
currently employs more than
200 individuals.
5. This move is part of a mul-
tiphase facility optimization
strategy the company began
in 2018. n
Vallum recognized for
bioactive PEEKplus spinal
interbody fusion device
By Shayna Korol
F
rost & Sulli-
van granted Val-
lum's PEEKplus
spinal interbody fusion
device the 2018 North
America New Product
Innovation Award.
Three insights:
1. The accelerated neu-
tral atom beam-treated
PEEKplus technology
is designed to enhance
PEEK interbody spinal
fusion devices' bioac-
tivity by creating a nan-
otextured PEEK surface.
2. PEEKplus is the only
FDA-cleared nano-
textured surface on a
PEEK interbody device.
"To enable bioactivity
and initiate the osse-
ointegration process,
the surface of the inter-
body device must be
hydrophilic; however,
unaltered PEEK is hy-
drophobic by nature.
Vallum addressed this
issue by altering the
PEEK material at the
nanoscale to make it
hydrophilic without any
coating or chemicals or
creating porosity," said
Frost & Sullivan Global
Program Director Sow-
mya Rajagopalan.
3. Vallum's ANAB pro-
cessor superimposes
nanoscale concavities
directly onto the sur-
face of the PEEK de-
vice to create 20- to
50-nanometer concav-
ities. It is designed to
convert any preexisting
PEEK interbody fusion
device into a PEEKplus
device. n
StemCyte gets FDA green
light to continue studying
spinal cord injury treatment
stem cells: 5 takeaways
By Mackenzie Garrity
T
he FDA granted StemCyte
permission to proceed with
its phase 2 investigational new
drug application for the Allogenic
Human Leukocyte Antigen-Matched
Umbilical Cord Blood Mononuclear
Stem Cells (MC001).
Five takeaways:
1. MC001 is a regenerative cell
therapy drug designed to treat
spinal cord injuries.
2. StemCyte has proven MC001
is efficacious, safe and well toler-
ated in a phase 2 trial in China.
3. Dr. Wise Young of Rutger's
University in Kunming, China,
led the phase 2 trial to test the
regenerative drug's safety and
efficacy.
4. Various centers in New Jersey
will be a part of the phase 2 U.S.
study. StemCyte aims to intro-
duce the new treatment option
in early 2019.
5. "This is a great achievement
by the StemCyte team. As a
leading regenerative cell thera-
py company, the success of the
MC001 will put StemCyte in the
central position in the emerging
stem cell application markets,"
said Jonas Wang, StemCyte's
CEO and chairman. n
