48 CFO / FINANCE 29 statistics on annual physician compensation by specialty By Megan Knowles T he average physician salary is $299,000, including primary care and specialties, with plastic surgeons earning the high- est average annual compensation at $501,000, according to Medscape's annual Physician Compensation Report. In an online survey, Medscape gathered data from more than 20,000 U.S. physicians across 29 specialties to assess compensation, hours worked, time spent with patients and more. Respondents were required to be currently practicing physicians in the U.S. Here are 29 statistics on annual physician compensation by specialty: 1. Plastic surgery: $501,000 2. Louis-based Ascension completed the sale of Lourdes Health Network in Pasco, Wash., to Brentwood, Tenn.-based RCCH HealthCare Partners, which is owned by private equity firm Apollo Global Management, according to the Tri-City Herald. The $21 million transaction was in the works for several years and officially closed Sept. 1. "I truly believe becoming a member of RCCH HealthCare Partners will make Lourdes a stronger organization, giving us new oppor- tunities for growth," John Serle, Lourdes CEO, said in a prepared statement. "This partnership will bring additional resources to our growing community and allow us to expand services and recruit specialists, so residents can get care they need right here at home." With the change in ownership, Lourdes Health Network convert ed from nonprofit to for-profit. RCCH plans to invest $18 million in Lourdes Health Network over five years, according to the report. RCCH has expanded its footprint in recent months. In February, the private equity firm announced it would form a public-private partnership with Seattle-based UW Medicine to own and operate hospitals in Alaska, Idaho and Washington. Under a $5.6 billion deal proposed in July, Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health will combine with RCCH. n Northwestern, Centegra complete 10-hospital merger By Ayla Ellison C hicago-based Northwestern Memorial Health- Care and Crystal Lake, Ill.-based Centegra Health System closed their merger deal Sept. 1. The two health systems have been in negotiations since 2016, when they signed a letter of intent to explore a merger. They signed a definitive agreement to combine in June. "Together with Centegra's employees, nurses, physicians and staff, we will provide patients in McHenry and Kane Counties more convenient ac- cess to clinical trials, the latest in treatment options and the ability to access world class specialized care from one of the best hospitals in the country, Northwestern Memorial Hospital," Dean M. Harri- son, president and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, said in a press release. Under the transaction, Centegra's three hospitals joined Northwestern Memorial HealthCare's seven hospitals, and Northwestern will govern, direct and oversee Centegra's business, property and funds. n
