Boston-based Partners HealthCare, Care New England and Brown Univer- sity, both in Providence, R.I., signed a memorandum of understanding to for- malize their commitment to improving care and bringing biomedical innovation to Rhode Island, the organizations an- nounced Aug. 7. Under the memoran- dum, Brown Univeristy will serve as the primary academic research and teaching organization for the combined organiza- tion. Brentwood, Tenn.-based RCCH Health- care Partners has acquired Kennewick, Wash.-based Trios Health through a joint venture with Seattle-based University of Washington Medicine, according to the Tri-City Herald. Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Merid- ian Health and Belle Mead, N.J.-based behavioral health provider Carrier Clinic signed a definitive agreement to merge, Hackensack Meridian announced Aug. 1. Kansas City-based University of Kansas Health System completed the purchase of Great Bend (Kan.) Regional Hospital and its affiliated clinics. King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services has acquired the Dan- shell Group, which owns 25 facilities that provide disability and autism services in the U.K. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems completed the sale of 425-bed Munroe Regional Medical Cen- ter in Ocala, Fla., to Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System on Aug. 1. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health has completed the sale of three Louisiana hospitals to Allegiance Health Management in Shreveport, La. Humana, TPG Capital and Welsh, Car- son, Anderson & Stowe completed their acquisition of Louisville, Ky.-based post- acute care provider Kindred Healthcare for $4.1 billion in cash, including assump- tion of debt. Los Angeles-based Pacific Alliance Medical Center, which closed last No- vember due to costs related to retrofit- ting its facilities to meet the state's seis- mic standards, was recently purchased by a physician group for $33 million. Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger purchased a medical office building in Scranton, Pa., currently occupied by its top competitor in the region, for $6.4 million. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems entered into a definitive agreement to sell two Arkansas hospitals to Little Rock, Ark.-based Baptist Health. Tenet Healthcare entered into a defini- tive agreement to sell its three remaining Chicago-area hospitals, the health sys- tem announced July 18. Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica acquired Toledo-based HCR ManorCare, the sec- ond largest provider of post-acute ser- vices and long-term care in the nation, for $4.4 billion through a joint venture with Welltower, a real estate investment trust. Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health, the 28-hospital spinoff of Com- munity Health Systems, entered into a definitive agreement to sell a 45-bed hospital in Tennessee, the health system announced July 27. Milwaukee-based Froedtert Health & the Medical College of Wisconsin ac- quired the former Wisconsin Heart Hos- pital in Wauwatosa from Ascension Wis- consin. Private equity firm Apollo Global Man- agement will purchase Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health for $5.6 billion including debt, the two entities announced July 23. Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare entered into a nonbinding letter of in- tent to sell Lafayette, La.-based Wom- en's & Children's Hospital to Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, the Lafayette-based hospital announced June 28. Hospital and health system executive moves Boston-based Tufts Medical Center named Michael Apkon, MD, PhD, CEO, effective in the fall. Mayo Clinic selected Gianrico Farru- gia, MD, to succeed John Noseworthy, MD, as president and CEO of Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, the 31-mem- ber board of trustees confirmed Aug. 10. Venice (Fla.) Regional Bayfront Health selected Karen Fordham to serve as CEO, effective Sept. 1. St. Louis-based SSM Health selected Tina Garrison to serve as president of SSM Health St. Clare Hospital in Fenton, Mo. Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Health officials confirmed Aug. 6 that system President and CEO Howard Grant, MD, will retire in September. New York City-based NewYork-Pres- byterian tapped Robert Guimento to serve as president of NewYork-Presby- terian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York City.
