19 PRACTICE MANAGEMENT Orthopedic surgeon charged with murder of Stryker sales rep in South Carolina: 5 things to know By Laura Dyrda S outh Carolina-based orthopedic surgeon Adam Lazzarini, MD, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and obstructing justice after a CrossLink Orthopaedics/Stryker sales representative died of a gunshot wound in Dr. Lazzarini's home October 2017, according to The State. Here are five things to know: 1. Local law enforcement investigated the shooting and called it "unintentional or accidental" at the time. Dr. Lazzarini turned himself in May 3 to the Lexington (S.C.) County Detention Center to await a bond hearing. 2. The shooting occurred when the sales representative was visiting Dr. Lazzari- ni in his home; the sales representative died of a single gunshot wound to the chest. 3. The circumstances of the shooting have not yet been made public. 4. Dr. Lazzarini's wife was found dead in the home she shared with her husband May 1. The circumstances surrounding her death are unknown and autopsy re- sults are pending, according to a sepa- rate article in The State. 5. Dr. Lazzarini was an orthopedic sur- geon and sports medicine physician at Southeastern Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine in West Columbia, S.C., and had privileges at Lexington Medical Center. According to the report, Lexing- ton Medical Center released a statement acknowledging the charges against Dr. Lazzarini and encouraged patients to "transition to another care provider." n Orthopedic surgeon salary in the UK, Canada & Australia By Megan Wood T he average U.S. orthopedic specialist salary is $497,000, according to the Medscape Orthopedist Compensation Report 2018. But how does this compare to orthopedic surgeon compensation in the U.K., Canada and Australia? The following represents compensation statistics for orthopedic surgeons in these three regions, according to PayScale. The U.K. • The average annual salary is £97,889 ($132,635), with a range of £49,738 to £158,927 ($67,392 to $215,339). • Bonuses range from £986 to £30,410 ($1,335 to $41,204). Canada • The average annual salary is CAD$205,579 ($159,771), with a range of CAD$70,000 to CAD$494,019 ($54,402 to $383,941). • The average bonus is CAD$19,000 ($14,766). Australia • The average annual salary is AUD$252,736 ($189,976), with a range of AUD$98,722 to AUD$533,468 ($74,207 to $400,995). • The average bonus is AUD$15,000 ($11,275). n Rothman Institute, Independence Blue Cross partner to expand bundled payments: 4 insights By Mackenzie Garrity P hiladelphia-based Rothman Institute partnered with Independence Blue Cross, according to Philly.com. For the next five years, Rothman Institute and Independence Blue Cross will expand bundled payment arrangements. 3.
