BECKER'S ASC REVIEW 7 Core Thoughts on Great Leadership Passionate, engaged leaders make a big difference to an organization's success. Scott Becker and Tamara Rosin penned this article covering seven core concepts for great leadership, including thoughts on goal setting, management and making hard decisions. 5 RCM Benchmarks for ASCs to Know and Improve Upon Regent Revenue Cycle Management's Michael Orseno discusses key benchmarks for ASC rev- enue cycle management, including days out- standing, claim lag and charge lag, percentage of outstanding claims greater than 90 days, net col- lection rate and the percentage of clean claims and claims denied. When Medicare released the 2017 proposed payment updates, the agency also requested additional information about outpatient total joint replacements to consider whether it would pay for the pro- cedure in ASCs. Barry Waldman, MD, director of the Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics in Baltimore and Derek Johnson, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and secretary at Denver-Vail Orthope- dics discuss their experiences with outpatient total joint replace- ments for the Medicare population. Both surgeons feel Medicare should allow total joint replace- ments in the ASC setting for appropriately indicated beneficiaries. The ASC setting provides a lower cost, higher quality venue for these procedures and allows patients to recover in their own home. Drs. Waldman and Johnson reflect on transitioning cases into the ASC, patient selection and new techniques that improve outcomes. continued on page 11 continued on page 16 continued on page 35 Should Medicare Allow Total Joints in ASCs?
