The historic dramatic growth rate of the industry seems to be coming to an end. An- nual growth in the number of ASCs has dropped from 5.5 percent in 2006 to just 1.8 percent in 2011, according to MedPAC data. What does this mean for the nearly 6,000 Medicare-certified ambulatory surgery centers operating in the United States today? Two industry experts answer five of the most pressing questions related to the dwindling growth of ASCs. Here are 100 benchmarks and statis- tics for ambulatory surgery centers based on reports from VMG Health, Avanza Healthcare Strategies, Provis- ta, The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, RemitData, Accredi- tation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, ASC Quality Collabora- tive, HealthCare Appraisers, Objec- tive Health and U.S. Federal Govern- ment data. All benchmarks and statistics on this list are averages gathered by compil- ing data from multiple ASCs. Operating expenses 1. Administrator salary is $108,014.10. 2. Administrators in the west and northeast receive the highest salaries, at $109,475 and $109,268 respec- tively, while administrators in the southeast receive the lowest salary at $102, 332. 1 3. Salaries, wages and benefits are be- tween 17 percent and 27 percent of net revenue. 2 4. Total operating expenses per OR is $1.44 million. 1 5. Employee salary and wages per op- erating room is $426,020. 1 10 Concerns Facing ASCs Heading Into 2015 By Laura Dyrda Healthcare is always changing and ambulatory surgery centers are in a great position to take advantage of the new care philosophy: providing the best quality for the lowest cost. However, that's only if they can overcome some of the bigger market challenges facing ASCs today: 1. Transitioning to value-based care.
